| Charity Begins at Home Sales
In the market for a retirement home last spring, design engineer Douglas Knapman says he looked at 20 communities before deciding on The Settings at Mackay Point in Yemassee, S.C. What tipped the balance wasn't the golf course, swimming pools or fitness center. It was a presentation at an open house by developer Richard McWhorter, who invited people to take part in a fishing tournament he was underwriting to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In addition to donating $15,000 to the foundation -- an employee has two children with the disease -- Mr. McWhorter offered to cover the $1,200 entry fee for any resident or home buyer who would take part in the fund-raising tournament. .
BA unveils its new Heathrow terminal
Unmanned check-in kiosks can also screen a passenger's passport or scan a visa. First-class and business lounges are unusually spacious, have a spa and are luxuriously furnished with chandeliers, wine racks and, in one, even a cinema. There are no fast food restaurants in the new terminal but it does offer a Tiffany's jeweler and a Prada store. The main terminal is 99 percent complete; workers in hardhats could still be seen putting on the finishing touches while stores were being stocked with goods. Terminal 5's completion shows how hard cities such as London are willing to work to maintain their status as world business and tourist hubs, commissioning showcase structures that act as shopping malls with art galleries, spas and Internet access. Terminals can be profitable in an era of tightened security, as travelers show up hours before their flights -- and then shop or eat while waiting to take off.

Rangers' McCarthy hits a roadblock
It kept hurting and didn't loosen up. I don't know what else to say about it. It's not fun." McCarthy will be evaluated today in Surprise by Rangers team physician Keith Meister. General manager Jon Daniels and manager Ron Washington said they aren't leaping to any conclusions about McCarthy's status. McCarthy was expected to start the Rangers' fourth game of the season April 4 at Anaheim in 27 days. The injury already caused the right-hander to miss 15 days of spring training. A similar layoff would give him only 12 days to get ready for that first start of the season. The Rangers have some flexibility. They won't need a fifth starter until April 12. If McCarthy isn't ready by then, Luis Mendoza likely would be the first alternate. "We haven't talked about any plans," Washington said.

CHICAGO, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc. The primary efficacy endpoint of statistical non-inferiority in the clinical cure rate at the test-of-cure visit was achieved. In the modified intent to treat population, cethromycin cured 83.1% of patients and Biaxin cured 81.1%.
California Avenue sculpture concept unveiled
City staff members met Thursday morning with sculptor Bruce Beasley and California Avenue leaders to discuss plans to replace an aging fountain with a tall granite sculpture and benches. Beasley earlier released conceptual images of his proposed sculpture -- which is similar to an earlier proposal he made for a replacement fountain. City officials have said the estimated $150,000 it would take to redo the plumbing for the fountain is too high. Farewell fountain, hello sculpture Palo Alto pranksters will have to find something else to spike with soap, as California Avenue's aging fountain is set to be removed and replaced with a sculpture. The simple, single-tiered concrete fountain, located near the Caltrain station, is suffering from plumbing damage, according to Linda Craighead, staff liaison to the city's Public Art Commission.
PA school language plan may cost too much
A detailed new plan to start teaching foreign languages in elementary schools may be too expensive for Palo Alto, school board members told a study group Tuesday night. The board greeted long-awaited findings from the Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) committee with enthusiasm, yet hesitated over the estimated $1.1 million per year price tag. The committee recommended beginning foreign-language classes in third grade and aiming for proficiency rather than mere exposure, a goal that would require hiring a traveling team of eight specialists and a program supervisor. The findings were presented for discussion and required no board vote, but will be included in long-term Strategic Plan discussion in the spring, board members said. The committee of parents, teachers, principals and district staff was formed following a board promise last winter to examine languages for all students in the wake of debate about the Mandarin-immersion program starting this August.

The Once Juggernaut: Rising Quickly
Instead of the 75-seat clubs and bars The Swell Season played last year, they'll be headlining venues like Radio City Music Hall and the Coachella Music Festival. There was one other blessing the film wrought Hansard and Irglova fell in love while promoting Once last spring. "They're a great story," says Steve Feldstein, a spokesman for Fox Home Entertainment, which released Once on DVD in December and expects to see a spike in sales at retailers mimicking the movie's ascent on Amazon. "There's nothing quite like the Oscars as a promotional vehicle. Their performance was wonderful. Their speeches were honest and fresh." Fox Searchlight launched the film in limited theatrical release in May with a 16-city bus tour. Screening the movie for local press and closing with live Swell Season performances, the tour built on the goodwill the film had established with critics at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
