Obama defends ability to handle crisis

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -- Looking ahead to Saturday's caucus, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama had to cope with some pesky issues of the recent week, defending himself against an ad that ran in Texas and the fallout from a former adviser's remarks.

His presidential rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, won the Ohio and Texas primaries Tuesday after questioning Obama's fitness to handle crises. On Wyoming's friendlier landscape, where he is expected to win Saturday, Obama seemed determined to ease voters' minds - and to take a few jabs at Clinton.

Speaking in a crowded gym in Casper on Friday, Obama alluded to Clinton's Texas ad, which suggested that only she has the experience and mettle to handle a national crisis at 3 a.m.

"That is designed to feed into your fears," Obama said.

A rare bit of Welsh glory for Edinburgh

AN OVERUSED phrase it might be, but Edinburgh's "top drawer performance" against the Blues in last night's Magners League clash at Cardiff Arms Park, was exactly that. A late drop goal from the outstanding Phil Godman, provided Edinburgh with the perfect start to 2008 and, understandably, left coach Andy Robinson purring with satisfaction. On a night that would have been better suited to a spot of bog-snorkling, Edinburgh produced a measured performance to not only secure a morale-boosting victory away from Murrayfield, but to further improve their chances of lifting the Magners League silverware. Robinson warned that idle talk of championships and title silverware would not be wise in the coming weeks despite his side's recent rejuvenation in the competition. However, there is little doubt that, behind closed doors, the coaching staff and players too, will have grand designs on the Celtic title.

Boutique hotel shines in Bodrum

Tucked away atop a hill a five-minute drive from Bodrum's center is a modest yet luxurious boutique hotel. Having bucked the declining tourism trend in the area both in 2006 (only the hotel's second season) and early into the summer of 2007, The Butterfly may have struck a business model for accommodation that can withstand any blows to the area's tourism industry a model that makes it stand out from the majority of Bodrum's other hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Bookings have doubled every year since opening, said Patrick Hembrough, joint-owner of The Butterfly. Even more interesting, the hotel has not spent any money on formal advertising. The Butterfly opened in its current form and location about two-and-a-half years ago. In its first season, almost all of their clientele discovered The Butterfly via the hotel's Web site.

Loan Scandal Escalates

Asked about Lehmann running its financial aid office while being paid by a lender, Silber said, "I don’t know if it raises concerns" for the university.

As the loan scandal has grown in the last two weeks, more and more institutions have become involved.

Cuomo started off with a series of information requests and then agreements with colleges to stop taking payments from lenders based on the business the companies gained from being on recommended lender lists maintained by the colleges. Many of the colleges also agreed to repay these funds, which Cuomo called "kickbacks," but many colleges defended as a means of obtaining funds for student aid. Many of those agreements were with Education Finance Partners, whose CEO is also scheduled to appear at the Key West conference on protecting institutions from questions about inducements.

Latest from the

Attorney General under President George W. Bush, and conservative state Supreme Court Justice Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr., cousin of prominent right-wing radio commentator Rush Limbaugh.

Political opposition and loss of funding killed the program in Massachusetts, which was initially successful in the early 1970s.

National experts on juvenile crime urge states to invest in this type of counseling and rehabilitation, instead of confinement and punishment, as a way to stem adult crime and incarcerations. But for the last 20 years, most states have gone in the opposite direction, said Liz Ryan, director of the Campaign for Youth Justice.

A series of high-profile youth crimes in the mid-1980s spurred most states to adopt tough juvenile crime laws, which resulted in overcrowded corrections facilities, scandals over abusive and punitive treatment and corrections budgets that often surpassed the cost of public education, Ryan said.

Dallas Stars don't want rest at the expense of rhythm

As far as unrestricted free agents, I think they will have some very tough choices on older players Mattias Nortsrom and Stu Barnes. I think Barnes has a better chance of sticking around because of the trade of Jeff Halpern. Miettinen, Hagman, Brad Winchester and Johan Holmqvist are all desirable players, but the money would have to fit.

The one fly in the ointment in committing for three seasons at $7.8 million to Brad Richards is that Mike Modano's contract counts against the cap even if he retires. In the new CBA, the league tried to prevent teams from spreading the cash out over long-term deals for retiring players. For example, giving someone a 10-year deal for $10 million, and having that deal loaded near the front of the contract. Thus, the cap hit would be only $1 million a year and the player could retire after two years and, in theory, have the contract come off the books when he retired.

As far as Will Ferrell films go, 'Semi-Pro' is minor league

Say hello again to the magnificent, cheesy, infamous and long-gone Virginia Squires.

It was the local professional basketball team of the 1970s, the one with the worst winning percentage in American Basketball Association history.

So why bring up that rarest of things, a local professional sports team?

The new movie "Semi-Pro," which opens today, is the culprit. Shameless buffoon Will Ferrell stars as a pop singer who owns, coaches and plays on a small-market team as the ABA nears extinction.

Indeed, as shown in the movie, the ABA did come to an end in 1976, allowing four of its teams to merge into the NBA. The Virginia Squires was not in that final four.

In the movie, the struggling team at the center of things is the Flint Tropics, a fictitious outfit centered in Flint, Mich., where Ferrell's character, Jackie Moon, is as famous as Henry Ford.

Science Tough Roads Loom Ahead for U.S. Pharmaceutical Giants

The reason biotech firms are popular purchases for pharmaceutical giants is that there is currently no U.S. regulatory pathway for generic biotech drugs, effectively allowing biotech drug inventors to sell a brand only product indefinitely until new legislation is mandated.

Many pharmaceutical companies are cutting staff to maintain profits with companies like Eli Lilly & Co announcing it will cut 10% of its workforce and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. announcing it will cut about 4300 jobs and close 27 manufacturing facilities. Some drug makers are also looking to outsource the manufacture of their medications overseas where the costs are much lower. Such costs saving measures are unlikely to mean lower drug prices for U.S. consumers where the brunt of the cost of development of a medication is made back by drug makers.
