Search age:

I still find it hard to believe that the person Sweetie [his wife, Sana, 27], who wrote such wonderful things to me on the internet, is actually the woman I married and who has not said a nice word to me for years."

Other couples, though, did better online, including singer James Blunt who "sold his sister on ebay". He explained to British GQ : "My sister was crying because she couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland. Planes were on strike, the ferry was out of season and there were no trains. I whacked it on ebay: 'Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armour to get to a funeral in Ireland. Please help!' The guy who won had a helicopter. "That was three years ago. They're getting married this summer."

Then there was the Australian photographer who gave his girlfriend a gift-wrapped house for Valentine's Day.

War hero awarded Silver Star after his death

This month, the Marine Corps posthumously awarded Sean the Silver Star, the nation's third-highest award for bravery under fire, for his actions during the Fallujah firefight. The ceremony was Feb. 6.

"It was the day he turned 25," Stokes said, then corrected himself. "Would have been 25."

It was the first time a no-stripe private had been awarded the Silver Star since Vietnam, and only a couple of people got one even back then.

Sean returned to the United States a changed man, his father said. He clearly suffered at least a mild form of post-traumatic stress. He would spend three hours a day working out, training in martial arts and kickboxing. He drove fast - way too fast for his father - and talked about buying a superfast motorcycle.

Several months later, Sean's unit was deployed to Iraq.

Internet Does Linking to Copyrighted Material Infringe? Warner Says ...

Warner Bros. Records files suit against music search engine, SeeqPod for infringement of copyrighted material Warner Bros. Records announced on Friday that it has filed suit against music streaming search engine, SeeqPod. According to Ars Technica, the media giant claims that the search engine, though it does not host any of its available files, infringes on the copyrighted works of intellectual property owners.

SeeqPod defends itself, using the DMCA's "safe harbor" provision to protect it from lawsuits.

Under the provision, companies that only link intellectual property, and not host them, are protected from lawsuits. The provision was meant to defend search engines that link to illegal websites, so long as the web service does not hand select certain material that can be linked. Only as long as the service automatically links without specifically selecting the recipients of the material or the material itself, is it protected under the provision.

Pakistan's Political Coalition Means New Challenges for U.S.

There are certain basics in the constitution, but the 'who does what' in the future is something that they are going to have to settle," Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Richard Boucher said at a news conference in Brussels on Thursday. "We are pretty much bystanders in that process. Those are things that need to be worked out within Pakistani politics and Pakistani society."

After six months of intense, behind-the-scenes involvement in Pakistani politics -- such as brokering the return last fall of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who was subsequently assassinated -- the future U.S. role is likely to be limited to financial aid for development and the military, and cooperation in combating militant groups such as al-Qaeda and the Taliban, according to U.S. officials.

February 2008

The initial contract for 80 aircraft is valued at $40 billion, and the service has plans to purchase as many as 100 more at an as yet undetermined cost.

The Northrop KC-30, which is based on the EADS Airbus A-330 passenger jet, had been considered the more capable aircraft. It's bigger, which means it can carry 20 percent more fuel, 20 percent more passengers, and 30 percent more cargo. It can also carry 45,000 pounds more fuel than Boeing's KC-767. But Boeing had pitched the smaller size of the 767 as a feature, rather than a handicap. However, the 767 is at the end of its commercial life. The military would have been the only customer for the airplane had Boeing won the contract, raising concerns about maintenance costs.

The KC-30 will be assembled in Mobile, Alabama, but much of the work will be done in Airbus's facility in Toulouse, France.

The way it used to be, kids...

I would not have liked to live back then," laughs 10-year-old Jack Heap, a Year 6 pupil. "Going on the walk was great, especially looking at the old wells."Fellow classmate, Kiera Janicwiez, 11, agrees."It must have been quite hard living back then but I have enjoyed finding out all about it. "It was especially interesting to learn about a pub that was called The Anchor which used to be a field that belongs to my grandad."The book contains descriptions of what it was like to be a child in the village in an age when there were few cars and they could safely play in the streets, sledging in winter all the way from the chapel to the stream. There are descriptions too of how the village sounded with church bells ringing out and cartwheels and clogs clattering over the cobbles, as well as the "knock-upper" who woke mill workers by rattling a long pole against their windows.Other topics include health, families, the home, washing, communications, clothes, play and entertainment, community, transport and travel and religion.Head teacher of St Mary's, Simon Scott, said the book had been enjoyed by all children at the school."It was Year 5 and Year 6 who went on the walk and have been involved in the main but we have put other copies in our library and all the children, of all ages have been interested.

Thank Newsnight it's Friday

AIDS activists are warning that an increasing number of simultaneous infections with HIV and tuberculosis has created a deadly co-epidemic that is spreading across sub-Saharan Africa. Researchers say half of all new TB cases are now infected with HIV, and health care systems in the region are struggling to cope. In the Western Cape, a child is a hundred times more likely to contract TB than in the developed world. A shocking new development.

It's worth watching the markets and the Mexican floods.

And are there any other stories you think we should be covering? A lighter story to add to the mix would be fun.
