Castro steps down as leader

I saw three consecutive stories on Fidel and Cuba on our left-leaning, biased mothercorp. Not one mentioned that Cuba is a one party dictatorship, that Castro was a dictator held in power by his brother's control of the army, that in the early days of the "revolution" they shot, imprisoned or exiled their opponents.

Now they only imprison them - including a 75 year old grandfather calling for democracy. Cuba today has as little political rights and freedoms as Battista's right wing Cuba did.

Fidel is no Robin Hood, they are wealthy kleptocrats with huge bank accounts in Spain and Switzerland. No one can dare criticize the Cuban state without fear of prison, loss of housing or ration cards.

Canadians who vacation there blithely, not realizing that their resort lines the pockets of and props up a dictatorial regime are complicit in the Cuban people being delayed freedom.

As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere

RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.

The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

"These Web pages are tremendously popular," Mochalski said.

The services let users upload a file and then share a link, called a direct download link, in e-mails and Web forums for others to download the content.

I agree, bring Fesenko up now.

Looks like another mutany after the Price for Hart saga. Maybe Jerry just wore down from reading the message boards?
I bet he gets up at 5 am like the rest of us to see how the Jazz are doing and what move to make next. We should have lobbied harder to trade Collins, Hart and Miles for Dwight Howard. Man would we be good then.
The big story should be how the league allowed the Lakers to reload without giving up anything. Now thats the conspiracy. Bet we regret the Fisher move in the playoffs. .

Response to InfoWorld’s Choices on 2007’s Top Technology

First of all, I must note for the record that InfoWorld has never given me an award as being top in any category. I'm thankful that they've spared their readers that pain. Now that I've gotten that over with, I'd like to comment on an article I recently read over at InfoWorld.

David Marshall, a well known comentator on the virtualization arena and quite an interesting person, comments on his choices of the best technology from 2007. Although several fine products are mentioned, they seem to be the obvious choices because they offered technology that certainly was good enough to statisfy the needs of many organizations and were both highly and successfully publicized by their developers.

What about the technology that was less highly publicized but, very interesting nevertheless? I suspect that the products that were easiest to defend were selected due to the limited space allowed for such discussions.

Apple Files Five Major Touch Screen Patents

On February 21, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a powerful series of Touch screen related patent applications from Apple Inc. respectfully titled Touch Sensing Architecture, '>Typing with a Touch Sensor, Writing using a Touch Sensor, Touch Sensing through Hand Dissection and '>Contact Tracking and Identification Module for Touch Sensing. Although all five applications share a common patent abstract and summary, the patents do in fact present their unique distinctive presentations in the second half of each of these patents. All five applications share a common set of 55 patent figures with one that clearly illustrates a full computer touch screen based keyboard in the works.

Apple's Abstract

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger and palm contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, multi-touch surface.

ARI 1Q profit, revenue rises

ARI Network Services Inc. reported Monday that it recorded increases in both profit and revenue for the fiscal first quarter.

ARI (OTCBB: ARIS) posted net income for the quarter ended Oct. 31 of $243,000, or 4 cents per share, compared with $225,000, or 3 cents per share, for the same period a year ago. Revenue for the Milwaukee provider of electronic parts catalogs and marketing services increased 21 percent to $4.2 million from $3.5 million.

ARI chairman and CEO Brian Dearing said the marketing services business continued to drive revenue growth. About 45 percent of the revenue growth was because of the acquisition of OC-Net Inc., a Cypress, Calif. company that provides Web hosting and e-commerce services, in January 2007.
