A geek’s trip to Capitol Hill on Network Management

Melvin Ammori, General Counsel, Free Press David Burstein, Editor, DSLPrime George Ou, Editor at Large, ZDNet Haruka Saito, Counselor for Telecom, Embassy of Japan Christopher S. Yoo, Professor of Law and Communications, University of Pennsylvania

Christopher Yoo - After a brief introduction by Scott Wallsten who explained that the order of the presentations will be reverse alphabetical order, Christopher S. Yoo kicked off his presentation. Professor Yoo explained that networks, like roads, aren't built for everyone to use them at the same time. Yoo gave the example that if a person wants to know how fast he can travel on a freeway, he wouldn't know until he got there because we can't predict exactly how many other people will be on the road at the same time. Yoo explained the difficulty in projecting network capacity and that we can't always be right when determining whether more capacity or network management was the answer.

Minister dismisses more tax power for Holyrood

Launching the commission last year, Ms Alexander proposed significant new powers for Scotland to set levels of some taxes and to be assigned a share of other taxes set in London.

However, when it was suggested to Mr Cairns that he was not keen on giving more tax powers to the Scottish Parliament and that it was up to Holyrood to make the case, he replied: "Yes. The government's position is, is that we think the current fiscal arrangements benefit Scotland, that there are stable, transparent increases in public spending in Scotland. There is no case for the massive restructuring of that. In any case, the Scottish Parliament has powers to levy additional taxes if they think that's what they need and they haven't used them.

He added: "I want to reframe this argument.

I've seen numerous cases that have come through here, where people have been charged under very questionable circumstances with DUIs," Tillman says. "In this particular case, within a few days, the sheriff's department had in their hands a report saying she was legally drunk."

And yet they haven't charged her.

"I have a serious problem with that," Tillman says.

No one is saying that Wilkerson should face no penalty. Prosecutors, for example, could have charged him with leaving the scene of an accident, and it's hard to imagine the Reverend Oscar Tillman getting involved.

But manslaughter? Twenty-one years in prison?

Tillman began contacting the Sheriff's Office in August. He says he hasn't asked them to drop charges against Wilkerson, but he wants to know when they're going to charge Varker.

Did I really hear this....

Those sections go to about one third of our audience. We corrected the headline the next day in the Accuracy Watch, on the cover of our Northwest section and read by far more people than the Voices can reach. And we'll correct in the Voice sections Thursday, as per policy. I also apologized to French personally.

The story under the headline, by reporter Mike Prager, was accurate, French said. No problems with that, just the headline.

French talked to me a couple of times last week, at one point even asking me for advice on how he could extricate himself from the ethical morass. I don't advise politicians, explained to him that he'd have to figure that out for himself and offered him a chance to talk to the editorial page folks about a letter or even an op-ed column.

IBM explores 67.1m-core computer for running entire internet

We'll hand it to IBM's researchers. They think big - really big. Like holy-crap-what-have-you-done big.

The Register has unearthed a research paper that shows IBM working on a computing system capable "of hosting the entire internet as an application." This mega system relies on a re-tooled version of IBM's Blue Gene supercomputers so loved by the high performance computing crowd. IBM's researchers have proposed tweaking the Blue Gene systems to run today's most popular web applications such as Linux, Apache, MySQL and Ruby on Rails.

Women turn on ‘traitor’ Oprah Winfrey for backing Barack Obama

First off anytime you hear a new report the state " women" and "blacks". Now if that isn't making it clear that we are still referenced by the color of our skin although we're women, then I am not sure what it means. I want the individual in office that I feel is best fit; not because they're a woman or black just because they care and want to move this country forward. Why do black women always have to defend their choices in beauty, politics, education, our way of talking (deemed aggressive), you name it. When is the last time you had to fight to have your ideas considered because your white. I didn't think so. When is the last time you saw 9 black people or nine asian or 9 hispanics on the jury and one white person? I didn't think so. It's obvious that some individuals live under the fallacy that because I'm a womam I am treated the same when in fact I am a "black" woman, which is often made light of.
