Heat's Riley to leave team to scout lottery picks

The buck stops with me when we won the championship, it stops with me when I have the worst team in the league," he said.

Considering Kansas State forward Michael Beasley and Memphis point guard Derrick Rose stand at the top of the lottery board, the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, which runs March 13-16, and the Conference USA tournament in Memphis, March 12-15, figure to be on Riley's wish list.

"If I can scoot off and see some of these guys, that's what I'm going to do," he said, declining to name the prospects he would scout because of league rules regarding underclassmen.

Guard Dwyane Wade, the team's most recent lottery pick, said he respected the move.

"No question," he said. "It's no secret we're going to have a lot of balls in the lottery this summer.

Soak up Super Bowl fun in Arizona on a shoestring

If you're an everyman headed to Arizona's "Valley of the Sun" this weekend to participate in the Super Bowl XLII festivities, you'll have to get creative, as high-profile parties will be accessible only to high-rollers and corporate insiders.

"It's gonna be nuts," Scottsdale resident Matt Holmes said of the city, which is already crawling with the rich and famous. "Unless you've got a ton of money to blow, there won't be much for you to do."

Maybe not much compared to the scope of the event, but there will certainly be plenty -- whether you're someone who likes to be pampered, an outdoors type, a shopper, a barfly or a spiritual seeker, you can find ways to keep yourself entertained before and after the game.

Queensryche has a tour stop at home

In the late 1980s, it was second only to Heart as the most popular band to come out of Seattle.

Dubbed "The Thinking Man's Heavy-Metal Band" because of its smart lyrics and serious approach to music and performance, the band built a following before ever actually playing here. Determined from the start to conquer the world, it bypassed the nightclub route and went straight into the studio. Its independent recordings were hits on local radio, which led to a recording contract with EMI America. The debut "Queensryche" album came out in 1983 to good reviews and impressive sales. After that, the band began doing local shows and touring, building an international audience.

Queensryche released its elaborate, political-thriller concept album, "Operation Mindcrime," in 1988, but really hit its stride in 1990 with "Empire," its slickest, most popular release.

DUP successor 'must do business'

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has said he is not concerned if the new first minister has a more distant relationship with him than Ian Paisley.

Mr Paisley announced on Tuesday that he would stand down as first minister and DUP leader in May.

Mr McGuinness said the issue of Mr Paisley's successor was "no big deal to me".

"I am only really interested in working with people who are prepared to do the business, prepared to do the work."

Meanwhile, Stormont Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson has pledged to back Peter Robinson as the new leader of the DUP.

Mr Robinson, the current finance minister, is viewed as the clear favourite to take over after Ian Paisley steps down in May.

Four in five (83 per cent) of these webpages actually belong to innocent companies and individuals, unaware that their sites have been hacked. Websites of all types, from those of antique dealers to ice cream manufacturers and wedding photographers, have hosted malware on behalf of virus writers, Sophos reports.

The Problem Is Patent Quality, Not 'Trolls'

A site called Prepaid Reviews reports that four US wireless carriers have been hit with a patent lawsuit from a company called Intellect Wireless. Prepaid Reviews writes that "If Intellect Wireless was a firm that bought patents with the implicit intent of lawsuit, I could talk about the need to reform patent law. But if these are original inventions by Henderson, he has a case." I think this fundamentally misconceives the nature of the "patent troll" problem. The fundamental problem is about patent quality, not about motivations or business strategy of the people abusing the system. Advocates of patent reform like to focus on classic patent trolling firms whose only business is lawsuits because the extortionate nature of the transaction is most obvious in those cases. But if an otherwise-legitimate company gets an overly broad or obvious patent and proceeds to sue everyone in sight, that's still a problem, even if the firm really was the first person to develop a product fitting the description of the patent.
