Adams bulks up Tour staff with stars

Add a couple of big PGA Tour names to Adams Golf's marquee.

Less than three weeks after signing Q-school graduate Tommy “Two Gloves" Gainey and Brad Elder, the Plano, Texas-based equipment maker has added a pair of top-20 PGA Tour players in Rory Sabbatini and Aaron Baddeley.

Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Sabbatini, a former Nike staff player who is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour and ranked 11th in the world, will wear an Adams hat and carry the company's staff bag while using Idea a3 irons, an Idea Pro hybrid and Insight driver. He finished sixth on the money list last year after posting top-10 finishes in each of the four FedEx Cup playoff events and winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Baddeley, a two-time Tour winner and the 18th-ranked player in the world, was released from his deal with MacGregor in the fall.

Charles Stross' dense stories have made him a Singularity sensation

It's the stories we tell each other for amusement and social bonding. I'm skeptical about assigning purpose to an artistic phenomenon, because it's something that, at bottom, we do for fun and communication. (When used for communication it may be used with serious intent, but that's far from being the main purpose of most SF.) Having said that, I do believe it's possible to insert interesting messages in fiction, and because fiction is viewed as a recreational activity this makes it possible to get them across to people who might not otherwise be receptive. It's called propaganda, and it can be used for political, social or religious purposes (for example, C.S. Lewis's Narnia books were explicitly conceived of as vehicles for Christian theology targeted at children of an impressionable age).

Keeping your heart healthy at every age

As a certified EMS worker, Jeff Schaffer knows a lot about the heart. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Schaffer travels with emergency crews from three states. He teaches CPR, gives lectures on heart health, and talks to school kids about firefighting and ambulance work. His father died from a heart attack at 61. So you would think when he began to have chest pains while teaching a CPR class, 15 years ago, Schaffer would have gone to the doctor. But he didn't. He ignored his own advice. Despite his vomiting and nausea, Schaffer admits, he was in denial. "I just blew it off and said it couldn't happen to me." Schaffer finally went to the ER, but not until after having symptoms for two days. At 39, Schaffer was indeed having a heart attack. His doctors said he was lucky to be alive. The ironic part of this story is even though Schaffer knew all the symptoms of a cardiac event he never thought about his own heart.

Revealed: the mystery man behind canal safety signs

They did a spring clean every year, but I felt it needed cleaning more regularly than that. "I do about three days a week, usually about an hour at a time."A spokesperson for British Waterways said: "In response to consultation with users of the towpath, we have introduced signs asking everyone to observe a 6mph speed limit."Our aim is to ensure all users have a safe, enjoyable experience." .

Despite setbacks, friends refuse to lose sight of girl's dreams

Kajal came here from an Indian orphanage nine months ago amid high hopes and great fanfare.

A well-known eye surgeon would restore her sight. Local news outlets featured her story. And adoptive parents in Franklin quickly stepped forward to offer a new home to the little girl found abandoned in an Indian train station three years ago, blinded with acid by her stepmother.

Beautiful Miss Idaho in LCHS Parade

Self-described skate punk and anarchist Thomas Brent Andrews is hell-bent on changing the way law enforcement agencies do business by martyring himself for the cause. The Pot Plan: Louie B. Stumblin and the War on Drugs (Chronic Discontent) is a true account of Andrews' life as a small-town journalist and his bouts with alcoholism and drugs.

The book is filled with stories of death-defying episodes, such as Andrews accidentally lighting himself on fire, scaling downtown Nashville's buildings, fighting country thugs and generally defending his punk-rock title. But his biggest scare came when police representatives harassed him for a column he'd written in a Tennessee newspaper about the War on Drugs.

After many years of abusive and destructive drinking, Andrews came up with the "Pot Plan" - putting down the booze in favor of marijuana.

Surprise Result: Fray Posters Love Slate

But the real triumph of the iPod should be credited to Apple's marketing department. Apple is one of the best at the "lifestyle" products game. There was no technological revolution, but it sure felt like one. That's mission accomplished in the product development biz. And again the genius of the iPod's visual design was to make it easily distinguishable at first sight. Back in the winter of '01-'02, anyone could immediately spot the trend setters. It was all about those white headphones.

Of course, those white headphones signify something quite different to other fraysters. Describing his daily morning commute with zombie-like iPod listeners' "long white wires filtering down to the nearest pocket, staring off into some spot on the bus where there is no gaze coming back, looking nothing less than already defeated and depressed by the day ahead of them," Ted_Burke rails against the anti-social behavior induced by the device, declaring: "I neither own an Ipod, nor wish to get one."

Shuffle over to the Culturebox Fray for other testimonials to the iPod's influence and contribution to societal ills.
