It is a rare but unalloyed pleasure to try a product or service for which you have only modest expectations, and find yourself blown out of the water. Easy WebContent, an online service designed to take the fuss out of editing Web pages, is that good. In fact, this $9.95-per-month service is better than most stand-alone Web design applications I've used during my 13 years of building sites. Easy WebContent isn't designed to compete with an Adobe Dreamweaver-scale product; it's meant to help average mortals create and update Web pages. And in that market, it has no rival. Online services such as Homestead.com use template approaches that restrict what you can do with your site; Easy WebContent comes much closer than its template-oriented competitors to being a Web design application.
Menaker to host new online series
Daniel Menaker, a longtime Gotham lit figure who decamped from Random House as editor-in-chief last spring, is hosting a new online interview series. Touted as a Web first, "Titlepage" will feature roundtable interviews with a group of writers, taking its inspiration from "The Charlie Rose Show," IFC's "Dinner for Five" and the French staple "Apostrophes." The six-episode first season begins March 3 on www.titlepage.tv. "Titlepage" is the "perfect way to share my enthusiasm for books and their authors -- in an instantly and permanently accessible format -- with as many readers as possible," said Menaker. "I've always sought out literary conversations, and I think we can make them surprising and entertaining for anyone who might want to stop by." Though it will have the production values of a TV show, "Titlepage" will seek to exploit its Web trappings by offering forums for discussion and links to online booksellers.
Despite tension, Jason Kidd doesn't forget good times
It didn't end the way either side wanted. What breakup ever does? This fresh start with an old team has yet to inspire the confidence Jason Kidd or the Mavericks sought. Kidd doesn't dwell on such weighty matters. All he knows is that the Mavericks need a win tonight at American Airlines Center. The possibility that win will come against New Jersey is secondary. After all, this isn't the first trip around the NBA block or the first trade for the 34-year-old point guard. "You know, we achieved a lot of great things there," Kidd said of his 6½ seasons with the Nets. "Nobody can take that away. They can say what they want. "You take a team from being trash to being respectable, nothing can change that." The Nets were 26-56 before they acquired Kidd in July 2001.

Possible talking point: the smartest woman in the world complains about sexism in the campaign (paragraph breaks removed): In an interview with ABC News' Cynthia McFadden to air on this evening's "Nightline," Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., says it's tougher for her to run as a woman than it is for her male opponent. Asked why she thinks so many women may be feeling sorry for her, Clinton said, "I think a lot of women project their own feelings and their lives onto me, and they see how hard this is. It's hard. It's hard being a woman out there. It is obviously challenging with some of the things that are said that are not even personal to me so much as they are about women."..."Every so often I just wish that it were a little more of an even playing field," she said, "but, you know, I play on whatever field is out there."...But apparently Clinton thinks -- based on this comment -- that the "playing field" is easier for a black man than a white woman.
Suicidal pets steal the show
The notion of the Western World's pets being depressed is a hard one to fathom. These are the same animals that wear tailor-made clothes, eat gourmet biscuits, enjoy spa bath mini-breaks and have their every needs met by obliging owners who should know better. But depressed they are. A leading British veterinarian says that pets at risk of self-harm are increasingly being prescribed anti-depressants because they cannot discuss problems in their lives with others. I found this phenomenon – perhaps inexcusably – a touch ridiculous and perhaps NEWS.com.au readers did too because the article was easily our most read story of the week. So, the humble pet might have taken the ultimate glory away from Hollywood's night of nights but our extensive coverage of the 80th Annual Academy Awards certainly got readers clicking.
