With guidance from the Philadelphia-based Green, an avid classic-rock fan, the kids became fans of Yes' style of progressive rock and invited Anderson to perform on the soundtrack for the film. The next step was a tour, for which he happily obliged. The band is playing a set that includes about 10 Yes songs, including the challenging, nearly 20-minute-long suite "Close to the Edge" from 1972. .
Metropolitan Opera Extends Its Populist Mission
As of this month, the Metropolitan Opera is bringing its populist message to a new audience: schoolchildren. Last Saturday, the Met transmitted "Romo et Juliette," starring Anna Netrebko, live via satellite to high-definition screens at five New York City public high schools. Some 2,000 students and family members attended for free. On New Year's Day, the Met will transmit to the same schools its new production of "Hansel and Gretel." Today, 2,500 students will spend their last day of school at the Met's first student open house, watching the final dress rehearsal of "Hansel and Gretel" and learning about how the sets and costumes are made. This outreach to public-school students is a new element in general manager Peter Gelb's multipronged effort to bring opera back into the cultural mainstream.
Sen. Bond: House finds time for steroids while FISA sits
He believes its top priority should be to vote on the bipartisan terrorist surveillance bill (the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA) that overwhelmingly passed the Senate. "The Senate bill gives our terror fighters the tools they need to track terrorists," explains the Republican lawmaker, "and also adds additional privacy and civil rights protections that Americans have never had before." Bond notes with sarcasm that before going on vacation, the House found time to investigate steroids in baseball and political contempt resolutions -- but not to pass the terrorist surveillance bill. As a result, says Bond, "they have compromised our ability to detect and disrupt attacks." Bond says instead of acting on FISA, the Democrats are bringing up an energy bill for the fourth time in 14 months -- legislation he contends would not ease Americans' pain at the pump, but instead drive up the price of gas even higher by increasing taxes on oil and gas companies.

CBS News consumer safety correspondent Nancy Cordes first reported on Westland/Hallmark's use of sick, or "downer" cows, on a January broadcast of the CBS Evening News.Cordes reported that meat-industry officials said at the time that there was no way to know if the cows actually entered the meat supply and that ailing livestock would have had to pass a gauntlet of USDA veterinarians and inspectors before being slaughtered and sent to market.But Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer now says his department has evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations."Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall," Schafer said in a statement.A phone message left for Westland president Steve Mendell was not immediately returned.Federal officials suspended operations at Westland/Hallmark after an undercover Humane Society video surfaced showing crippled and sick animals being shoved with forklifts.Two former employees were charged Friday.
