Viewers' Comments On Randy Salerno - Part 21

Keep family first. Cherish your friends. Remember where you came from. Live in the moment. The "smart-aleck" kid from Crystal Lake taught us many things by just being himself. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this tragedy.--Curt Mitchell, Hinsdale, ILI have written before, but I had to tell this story. When Randy died it hit me hard as it was so sad, as he left his family and friends behind. After watching all the tributes and hearing the stories of Randy from his friends and family, I realized he was just like my brother-in-law who was killed going on three years in Aug. on Lake Shore Drive in a traffic accident. Jeffrey who was killed was just like Randy and would get away with comments of how he handled himself. I was with Jeffrey the day he died as we buried my friend his cousin, and we were sitting at the table for the lucheon and Jeffrey had us in stiches laughing.

Experts in San Antonio's real estate market remain cautiously optimistic about commercial prospects around the city.

Six panelists discussed the pros and cons of the market Thursday at a Commercial Real Estate Women's forum at the Convention Center.

"We will never be the sexiest kid on the block," said Mark Granados, managing partner with HPI Real Estate Services & Investments. But he added that San Antonio still has a lot in its favor, such as several job-growth industries.

In North Central San Antonio, big things are continuing to happen with Park North, the 1-million-square-foot Central Park Mall redevelopment project led by HPI.

Navigating to retirement

Over the last six months, some of the toughest decisions have been not to make any decisions," said Gold, who also works with the Moores and Scotts. "It's really important to stay the course."

401(k) nest egg For many workers nearing retirement, workplace 401(k) programs represent a nice pot of money. That makes them a tempting place to look for cash as credit conditions tighten.

The issue of whether or not to take a 401(k) loan is one of several key decisions being thrust upon workers as they're forced to assume more control over their retirement plans. Fewer employers offer company-managed pensions, so employees must make more of their own decisions.

The various 401(k)-style retirement plans can be a great way to accumulate wealth. The programs feature tax-sheltered growth and employer-provided matching funds in most cases.

A trip through an AIDS-ravaged African village, in Lodi

The gymnasium at Lodi's First Baptist Church has been transformed into four African villages where families are stricken with AIDS.The exhibit, organized by the Christian humanitarian organization World Vision, brings people into an African village and tells the story of a child through his or her own words."It was very moving," Kiley Bliss, of Lodi, said after walking through the exhibit on Thursday's opening day. "It gets you out of your own little world."The exhibit, called "Step into Africa," continues through Monday. The community is invited. The gym consists of about 3,000 square feet of wooden walls and straw roofs depicting the environment of a remote African village, including a poverty-stricken family's house. The consistent message in the exhibit is that many African families not only live in poverty, but many of them get AIDS through unprotected sex, rape or by other means. In the small southern African country of Lesotho, for example, 56,000 children have lost both their parents to AIDS, according to World Vision."It was pretty intense," said John Alvarez, of Woodbridge, a volunteer from First Baptist.

Belated Firefox patch coming for (another) protocol handling bug

Mozilla security chief Window Snyder says the "jar:" protocol handler issue that currently haunts Firefox will be fixed very soon in the next refresh of the browser.

The problem (see previous coverage) is that Firefox's "jar:" protocol handler does not validate the MIME type of the contents of an archive, which are then executed in the context of the site hosting the archive. This can be exploited to conduct cross-site scripting attacks on sites that allow a user to upload certain files (e.g. .zip, .png, .doc, .odt, .txt).

On the official Mozilla security blog, Snyder explains the vulnerability and attack vector:

Firefox supports the Java Archive URI scheme that allows the addressing of the contents of zip archives.

Changing the Culture of Philanthropy: a Young Donor's Views

As a growing number of charities and donors raise questions about how traditional philanthropy works, join a discussion with a donor who is trying to transform the process.

Holden Karnofsky, 26, left the hedge-fund industry to start GiveWell, an organization devoted to evaluating charities, as well as the Clear Fund -- a philanthropy he calls "the world's first transparent grant maker" -- to demonstrate how he and his colleagues think foundations should operate. The Clear Fund, now in the process of awarding about $140,000 in grants, asks its grant applicants to provide hard evidence that they are effective. It publishes its assessment of that evidence on the GiveWell Web site, whether it decides the group is worthy of support or not.

He will be available online to answer questions from Chronicle readers about the culture of foundations, the new generation of philanthropists, the value of charity-rating services, and his own efforts to create a new type of grant maker.
