Nanopores That Can Recognize, Separate Proteins and Small Molecules

Nanopores, holes less than one-thousand the width of a human hair, are capable of isolating strands of DNA or therapeutic drugs from a solution, based mostly on the size of the pores. Now, a chemist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has created nanopores that can recognize and interact with certain molecules, actively controlling their movement across synthetic membranes. Results were published online Feb. 3 in Nature Nanotechnology. .

The things the little girl said

She talked about how he "played barbershop" and cut her hair, and said the sexual abuse happened once, at his house, with his fingers, knuckles and hands.

"Actually," the little girl said, "it happened two times."

"When was the other time?" the interviewer asked.

"I think it was Tuesday."

"Okay."

"Well, no, last week was Wednesday. I think probably he touched me on that day."

"Okay."

"It was," the little girl finally said. "I asked my mom. She said it was Wednesday. So I believed her."

This interview lasted 42 minutes. The interviewer wrote in her report that the child had given "clear disclosure of sex acts." The little girl, she wrote, should be kept away from her father.

EastNets Service Bureau gains popularity as more than 100 banking and ...

This success is a result of careful research of the regional financial community for an outsourcing platform and the managed services to complement it. EastNets Service Bureau is a comprehensive outsourcing platform established at a secure data centre in a fully-owned subsidiary of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone, delivering EastNets solutions to banks and financial organisations throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Balkans, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Hazem Mulhim, CEO, EastNets said:

'The high level of service and security that EastNets solutions offer has brought it a growing number of clients. Today we have 100 customers on the EastNets Service Bureau and are contracted to implement our payment and security solutions through the platform for more customers by the end of the year.'

Increasingly high standards imposed by the international banking industry, government legislations and recent security threats, have required banks to increase investments in their technology systems and those supporting it.

Prizes given for plans to ‘tag’ an asteroid

In the student category, the $5,000 first-place prize went to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Engineering student Jonathan Sharma was the principal investigator for a mission design entitled Pharos.

NASA and the European Space Agency co-sponsored the competition and will review the mission designs, the Planetary Society said.

"We are very happy that this competition inspired innovative designs to solve an important problem that could affect life on Earth — as the dinosaurs learned the hard way," Bruce Betts, the Planetary Society's director of projects, said in an announcement listing the winners. “We hope the winning entries will catalyze the world's space agencies to move ahead with designs and missions to protect Earth from potentially dangerous asteroids and comets."

To tag an asteroid
Although Apophis was used as the test case for the contest, the Planetary Society said the mission designs could be adapted to tag any potentially hazardous asteroid.

Archives for: January 2008

We have become a family of chargers. Not the credit card variety, but the cell phone, digital camera battery, ipod kind of chargers.

That's why one of my favorite Christmas presents not only helped me organize those electric items, but also made a corner of my kitchen look better.

The multi-charging unit, painted white, just like my woodwork, fits neatly in a space on the counter and hides a power strip inside. I plug in the unsightly chargers and all I can see are the tiny plug-ins.

At night, we line up our electronic neccessities and know right where they are every morning, charged up and ready to go.

It makes me feel so twenty-first century.
