Clearing the truth from the chaff in 14th Dist. campaign
Then there are the TV and radio ads. "Ten years. They could be in college by then. Jim Oberweis says we need to be in Iraq 10 years," intonates Foster, while images of children flash over the screen. "We're already in trouble, and Bill Foster wants to raise our taxes? That's crazy!" proclaims an incredulous woman in an Oberweis ad that claims families would pay $8,000 a year more in taxes if Foster was elected and his plan approved. What can you believe? Is Oberweis a hard-hearted man looking to get elected to anything, firing American workers and sending their jobs to China, willing to smear anybody who opposes him, including fellow Republicans in the primary? Is Foster going to spend-spend-spend us into the poorhouse, take away your ability to see the doctor of your choice, surrender to terrorists and allow your daughter to get an abortion without telling you about it? After sifting through the fliers and commercials, we came up with some of the main things each candidate is charging the other with.
Damaging Tornadoes Hit the South
No fatalities were immediately reported in Prattville, outside Montgomery, but two people were critically injured, said Fire Department official Dallis Johnson. Twenty-seven people had minor injuries, officials said. About 200 homes were damaged or destroyed. A curfew began as darkness fell Sunday. A 35-bed mobile hospital unit was set up outside a Kmart to treat victims with minor to moderate injuries so that hospitals could take those with serious injuries, Dr. Steve Allen said. Toppled utility poles and storm debris littered the area. Shelters opened at churches, and school buses shuttled storm victims out of the stricken area to the city center. David Shoupe, 18, assistant manager at Palm Beach Tan, said he and a co-worker barely made it into a laundry room before the roof fell in and the wind tossed shopping carts aloft.

Crude oil futures increase against unstable background
Lynch thinks OPEC will hold production levels steady, arguing that last week's price declines have largely accomplished the cartel's goals. OPEC is also worried that an oversupplied oil market would drive prices dramatically lower, Lynch said. Other analysts are divided in their views, but a consensus appears to be forming that OPEC will increase production if prices remain above $80 a barrel. Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Illinois, notes that what OPEC says and what it does are not necessarily one and the same thing. The cartel could easily announce a production increase to keep prices on their downward tack, but then decline to boost supplies if prices remain low in the coming months. "OPEC could easily fall short of any agreed upon production increase," Ritterbusch said in a research note.
Your franchise could be at risk
Have you looked at radio-station Web sites lately? Some of them, even in small towns, do a good job of mimicking newspaper Web sites, including newspaper-like photographs of local events as well as daily updates of news, sports and obituaries. The ads look just like the ads on newspaper Web sites, which means those ad dollars are not going to the newspaper.I hate to admit that we were slow in getting our Web site up after my wife and I bought our last newspaper. There was so much to do, a Web site kept getting pushed down our "to-do" list. The wakeup call came when our city government began talking about giving away free business links on the city Web site. That would have made it more difficult for us to sell ads on our Web site. We announced plans for our site in a hurry, and the city, fortunately, dropped its proposal. The fact is that anyone can start a Web site these days for a few hundred bucks, and those newspapers procrastinating about the Internet need to get their own sites up before someone else does, be it a radio station, a chamber of commerce, a tourism group, a high-school journalism class, the computer whiz down the street or some guy you've ticked off with a news story.Your newspaper owns the franchise for news and advertising in your community and probably has done so for 100-150 years.
