| Got Junk CEO wins entrepreneur honors
The International Franchise Association announced its 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year at its conference last week in Orlando. Brian Scudamore, chief executive officer of 1-800-Got Junk?, took the honor. Scudamore, who dropped out of high school, said he got the idea while at a McDonald's drive-through, and started the junk-removal company with a $700 pick-up truck. The business generated enough money for him to enroll in college, but its success was the reason he dropped out of school a second time. The company now has 310 franchise locations, including one in Orlando, and a total of 805 trucks, according to the company's Web site. Scudamore shared the following advice for franchisors: Never compromise on the quality of people you bring into your company and choose as your franchise partners.
WATER POLO
Water polo is now an established sport played throughout the world but it has a long history which began in England. The first documented evidence of the game was when the Bournemouth Premier Rowing Club carried out the "first series" of aquatic handball matches" on 13 July 1876. Various ball games had been played in the water before this time, the most common seems to have been a type of polo in which the swimmer "rode" an inflated skin or barrel, propelling the ball with the hands or a form of paddle and moving about by using the feet. These games were probably more in the way of "comic relief" and the game played on "barrel horses" was still to be seen in the early years of the present century. This is probably where the name "Polo" came from. Evidence suggests that the game was played in the 1870's in Leeds with a rugby ball and in Burton-on-Trent where a goal was scored by grounding the ball on the end of the bath, with the goalkeeper standing on the end and allowed to jump onto any player in possession of the soft india rubber ball.
Electronic censorship
THE WEB site Wikileaks is a true product of the Internet age. Started in 2006 to let whistle-blowers anonymously publicize secret information exposing what they see as malfeasance, it has put up 1.2 million documents, including a handbook for the administration of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. But as of last week, Wikileaks.org was no longer accessible. It had been shut down by a court that seems to have forgotten something important the First Amendment to the Constitution. What got the site in trouble was its posting of records from Julius Baer Bank and Trust of the Cayman Islands. These documents, according to Wikileaks, "allegedly reveal Julius Baer trust structures used for asset hiding, money laundering and tax evasion." The bank said a disgruntled former employee had illegally made use of stolen information.

Friday Updates
As I blogged about here earlier today, it's a big day in the fight against breast cancer. We just learned that Genentech's Avastin drug, already used to fight some cancers, has now been approved, by the FDA, to treat breast cancer. Breast cancer advocates are very happy about the decision, which helps to clear the way for another weapon in the battle against breast cancer and also puts money into the pockets of Genentech (DNA) investors. Already a big moneymaker for the company, Avastin now has another big market to try and conquer. There's still a ways to go before Avastin can prove that it's a sure-shot way to beat breast cancer, but today's FDA ruling means it's well on its way. We'll keep you posted as the Bay Area's biggest biotech company continues to do well, by doing good.
