Stanford gives large boost to aid
The Q&A was posted on the day Dartmouth announced its financial aid changes. "That was a very sensible thing for us to do ... to get out there and provide the information I suspect that families are looking for," Tilghman said of Moscato’s Q&A. "[It was] very effective in saying we don’t see things changing very much." The expanded aid programs at peer institutions will be unlikely to affect overall yield at the University, Moscato said. "I don’t think [the financial aid reforms] will make a very big difference overall as to where people choose to go to school," she said. Students who are offered better need-based aid packages at other schools often have their Princeton offers adjusted accordingly, she added. "I think that it’s a very good thing that so many top schools are now devoting the [type of] resources that we have [been devoting] for the past six years to improving financial aid," Moscato said.
Cities, states get 'A' for preparation
In the first report of its kind, U.S. health officials said the nation's states and cities made a strong effort to prepare for a flu pandemic, bioterrorism or other emergency health crisis, but big challenges remain. "I think in terms of effort and progress, an 'A,'" said Dr. Richard Besser of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when asked to assign a letter grade. "In terms of amount of work to be done, I would say that's absolutely enormous." It was the government's first assessment of the payoff from its investment of more than $5 billion since the terrorist attacks of 2001 to make the country better prepared for a variety of public health emergencies. The report looked at the staffing, laboratory capability and other resources of state, local and territorial health departments for handling bioterrorism or other disasters.
Census Bureau: Companies spend $251 Billion on network and computer ...
US businesses spent $251 billion on information and communication technology equipment and computer software in 2006, an increase of a little over 6% from 2005, the US Census Bureau reported today. Not surprisingly the rapid pace of technological advances in computers, telephones, fax machines and electromedical apparatus and network gear, have resulted in these assets being replaced much more quickly than other types of equipment, the bureau said in its latest Information and Communication Technology Survey. Many companies write off the full cost of these assets during the year of purchase rather than depreciating the cost over two or more years, the study found. Of the total spending in 2006 on information and communication technology equipment and computer software, or e-business infrastructure, noncapitalized spending accounted for $90.8 billion (36%), and capitalized spending accounted for $160 billion (64%).

The blog, which is updated daily, mirrors the Fox 8 program Gossip Girl, in which the identity of Gossip Girl remains a secret and everyone relies on her website for the latest scoop.

Halt Islamic banking study, group says
However, I have been told that Islamic Banking in Pakistan has a history of major scandals and flops where hundreds of thousands lost their savings. I hope that Canadian agencies are more careful in regulating these instruments. Posted 29/01/08 at 12:26 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
Hockey wives and abortion
They have cute websites designed to appeal to teenage girls, lots of advice about boys — giggle — and sites on MySpace. They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion. Planned Parenthood told me it frequently talks to women who went to these apparently welcoming places for counselling on the three options — abortion, adoption and parenting. The group says women report feeling badly treated. Charity's rewards The problem is worse than just some hockey fans inadvertently donating to a cause they may oppose — that is a personal issue between a fan and her team (in my case, the Canadiens). What irks is that our tax dollars are involved. The raffle money is channelled through the Sens Foundation, the team's registered charity arm, which is matching every dollar raised by The Better Halves.
